A BRIEF HISTORY
St. Mark's Anglican Church is situated in Cape Town, South Africa. The area now called Zonnebloem, was formerly called District Six. In 1950, the former government passed a law which forced people into racial groups. Another law made it illegal for people of different races to live in the same area. This law was known a the Group Areas Act. Between 1966 and 1980, people "of colour" were forcibly removed from District Six and relocated. Their homes and shops were bulldozed to the ground.

Today, none of the parishioners of St. Mark's reside in Zonnebloem, and travel from all over the Cape Flats to attend services. The church stands, as the "Last Bastion opposing Apartheid" - a flame that will not be extinguished.
